Andrew Ginzel & Kristin Jones

Andrew Ginzel studied at Bennington College in Vermont and the State University of New York. He and his partner, Kristin Jones, have won many awards and received numerous honors and commissions (you may view a complete list of these awards, honors, and commissions on their web site, which is located on our links page).

Among their numerous commissions is the Metronome (1999) in Union Square South (public Art Fund/Municipal Art Society with related companies, New York, NY). This large scale permanent public work (which has taken more than three years to complete) is an investigation into the nature of time, referencing multiple measures that simultaneously inform and confound our consciousness of the moment within the continuum. Conceived to confront the person on the street. The work suggests the instant and infinity, astronomical sequence and geological epoch relative to the place itself... to the individual's heartbeat...and breath. The work attempts to question our place in time by creating metaphorical bridges that span the scale of time. Metronome is integral to the history, architectural fabric, spirit and vitality of New York City. The work embraces and references the urban context, it speaks to the dynamic nature of the city and to the individuals who inhabit it. Ultimately, the work implies the impossibility of knowing time.
